What we do

Supporting families to keep business their edge — now and in the future.

Only 30% of family businesses successfully transition from the first to the second generation. Just 10% make it to the third, and fewer than 4% survive into the fourth.
The reason isn’t business failure, it’s family conflict.

At the Centre for Family Business at the Prague University of Economics and Business, we work with families whose companies have thrived for over a century. We understand what sets them apart and we focus on those same principles when supporting family firms: strong relationships, open communication, and clear agreements.

We combine academic research, practical experience, and a deep understanding of family business dynamics. Our goal is simple: to help families stay proud of their business, not divided by it.

In every company, relationships and communication matter. But in a family business, roles that are usually kept separate in “normal” companies meet every day: a mother is also the boss, a husband becomes a business partner, and a son joins as a new colleague.

In our executive courses, successors and owners of family businesses learn how to navigate these roles and move between them naturally – and how to have meaningful conversations about what truly matters: the future of the family business.

Together, we focus on:

  • preparing the next generation to take on responsibility,
  • setting clear rules for employing family members,
  • making strategic decisions about ownership and the division of shares,
  • and also on recognising when it’s time to consider external management, a company sale, or even the transition from entrepreneur to steward or investor.

Our courses blend real-life stories from family businesses, proven tools, and expertly facilitated discussions that help you find answers you can’t Google, ChatGPT or outsource – because they’re uniquely yours.

Every family that goes into business together sooner or later faces the same question: who, how, and when to pass on assets and the associated responsibilities.

Passing on a family business or other family assets is not just a legal or financial step – it is an emotionally demanding process that requires planning, trust, and careful preparation from everyone involved.

In our individual advisory sessions, we help families choose and set up the right tools and structures to ensure continuity while maintaining harmonious relationships. Together, we:

  • launch regular family meetings – a family council – and create a family constitution,
  • design ownership structures (e.g., holdings, trusts, endowment funds, or family foundations),
  • prepare plans for share allocation and asset settlements,
  • establish functional supervisory or management boards.

Our work is based on a combination of globally proven approaches, knowledge of the Czech legal environment, and real-life stories of businesses we have personally guided through intergenerational transition.

We help you create
a family constitution

Focusing on the family as a whole — not just a group of individuals.

In a family business, the strongest player isn’t the founding father, the mother as CEO, or the daughter as the new boss. It is the family as a whole.

Family businesses that overlook this dynamic will sooner or later hit obstacles – often not because of a flawed business strategy, but due to unresolved relationships, unspoken feelings, and unclear expectations. On the other hand, families that recognise their collective strength can leverage the family character of the business – economically, socially, and personally.

One of the key tools for cultivating this awareness is the family constitution – a document that helps the family stay aligned over the long term and understand one another. It includes:

  • shared values and the purpose of the family business,
  • rules for collaboration both inside and outside the company,
  • decision-making mechanisms,
  • and clearly defined expectations for all family members.

We don’t create the family constitution for you – we create it together with you. We guide you through a structured 10-step process that helps families not only write down the rules but, more importantly, agree on, understand, and embrace them together.

The result is a document that supports not only the management of the business but also the cohesion and continuity of the entrepreneurial family.
